We are donating to MenTalkHealth

I am super stoked to announce that we are donating 20% of all profits (50% on selected items) to Brighton based mental health charity "MenTalkHealth".

Who Are MenTalkHealth?

MenTalkHealth works to get men talking about mental health for the benefit of everyone.

They do this by sharing lived experiences and conversations from a range of people who have a story to share. They share the honesty, the humour, and the challenges in order to show others that these conversations do not have to be hidden. They promote conversations in the hope that they can tackle the stigma that prevents men finding help before it’s too late.

They create content, provide training, and host events open to everyone.

What do the donations support?

Besides going direct to the charity which is not only a stones throw down the road from me, it supports a cause I care massively about.

To breakdown what happens with the donations, Glenn Roberts (Development Manager for MenTalkHealth UK) has given us a breakdown...

  • Every £35 raised pays for course materials to help someone qualify as a Mental Health First Aider
  • Every £300 raised pays for one person to be trained as a Mental Health First Aider
  • Every pound goes towards every day running costs, to keep the charity up and running

Why MenTalkHealth?

There is no denying that men struggle to open up and talk about their feelings. The toxic image of "boys don't cry", and when you're told to "suck it up & be a man" has left many of us suppressing our feelings and emotions.

Society's expectations and traditional gender roles play a role in why men are less likely to discuss or seek help for their mental health problems. We know that gender stereotypes about women – the idea they should behave or look a certain way, for example – can be damaging to them.

Some statistics also show;

  • Three times as many men as women die by suicide
  • Men aged 40 to 49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK
  • Men report lower levels of life satisfaction than women according to the Government’s national wellbeing survey
  • Men are less likely to access psychological therapies than women: only 36% of referrals to NHS talking therapies are for men.

Whilst it is important to campaign for positive mental health conversation for all genders and identities, supporting a charity close to home means a huge deal to me, and eventually, we would like to be in a position where we can start supporting multiple charities at one time.

MenTalkHealth have also partnered with the national governing body of parkour in the UK - ParkourUK - running a mental health first aid course. A MHFA course is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.

The course will be delivered by Parkour UK’s Head of Development, Chris Grant. Chris is a qualified mental health first aid instructor in England and Scotland and has a wide experience of delivering the course over the last 4 years in and out of the Parkour community.

We are super excited to be sending Vicky on this Mental Health First Aid course on the 14th-15th July - meaning we will be better equipped in order to give mental health advice and to point you in the right direction should you require it.

Vicky is going on a MHFA course.

Following the two days of the MHFA course (2 SPACES REMAIN - BOOK HERE) on Saturday 16th July we have our well-being jam, starting at 12pm, Meeting Place, Brighton Seafront. (For a location, search "Meeting Place Cafe" on Google Maps)

We are really looking forward to working openly with MTH, PKUK & MHFA course in the future!
